Mining Company Supports Mesothelioma Study

A mining company from Minnesota's Iron Range has rescinded an internal study regarding mesothelioma in favor of backing a University of Minnesota study that will attempt to understand the high rate of mesothelioma cases in that region.

Originally Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. had planned to conduct their own study but decided to support a series of studies to be conducted early next year. They announced their decision at a meeting of the newly formed Minnesota Taconite Workers Lung Health Partnership.

The organization was formed to assist and support studies of miners and consists of unions, other mining companies, and University of Minnesota officials. The group just held their second meeting and will meet again in early 2008 to discuss updates and progress on the studies.
