Queensland Residential Sites Cleared Despite Asbestos

Two residential sites were cleared by workplace inspectors despite subsequent tests revealing the presence of asbestos.

Chrysotile asbestos was discovered in the vacant buildings located along Miami and Mermaid Beach with cement used in their frames. Asbestos was commonly combined with cement because of its bonding properties and resistance to heat.

The State Opposition used the findings to criticize what they feel are declining health and personnel standards among inspectors and called on the government to improve minimum standards for inspections. In addition they claimed the amount of asbestos found was more than sufficient for inspectors to notice. A group spokesman alleged asbestos containing materials and concrete were strewn throughout both sites.

A spokesman from Workplace Health and Safety said that after asbestos concerns at the sites were brought to their attention, state inspectors did find asbestos but not in the quanitites that the opposition group has reported. They have referred cleanup of the sites to the Gold Coast City Council which will contact building owners about removing the asbestos.
