Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) is one of America's oldest National Cancer Institute- (NCI) designated cancer centers. Founded in 1974, Wake Forest recently celebrated its third decade of delivering quality care, cutting-edge research and public education to those suffering from cancer.

A CCC designation is awarded to only those institutions offering advanced cancer research and treatment services. These cancer services are a direct result of the National Cancer Act of 1971, directed at addressing the need for comprehensive cancer services and up-to-date research initiatives. These National Cancer Institute-designated facilities undergo comprehensive reviews to ensure continued compliance with federally established standards for cancer patient care and research.

The Cancer Center is part of the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, which has 1,154 acute care, rehabilitation and long-term care beds. The Medical Center has been ranked as one of "America's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report since 1993. In 2008, the Cancer Center received the prestigious Blue Cross, Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers award. It is the only cancer center in the Triad region, and one of only five in North Carolina, to be awarded this designation. The Center received the award for its distinguished clinical expertise in treating such rare cancers as:

Conceived and developed as the central pillar of a community-wide program into research and other cancer-control paradigms, the Wake Forest Cancer Center operates in a five-state region bordered by western North Carolina. Serving diverse minorities, including African Americans, Hispanics and two regional Native American tribes (Eastern Cherokee and Lumbee), the Wake Forest Cancer Center places great importance on addressing cultural and demographic issues among both ethnic populations and the larger, often isolated, Appalachian rural population.

At the Wake Forest Cancer Center, translational research efforts are organized differently from other designated cancer centers. Entities within the Center, called Centers of Excellence (COEs), bring together researchers in the clinical, basic and prevention/genetic sciences along disease-specific parameters. Essentially, these COEs enhance scientific creativity and clinical applicability by interaction among the various disciplines represented, leading to unique translational insights and better treatment. In addition, as an NCI-supported Research Base, The Wake Forest Cancer Center facilitates participation among centers around the country, providing even distant centers with rapid access to innovative therapeutic trials developed by Wake Forest investigators.
COE leadership is divided among chairs, or section heads, in the fields of:
