USS Haddo SSN-604: History, Patrols, Crews

Commissioning

The USS Haddo, (SSN-604 submarine, nuclear-powered) was the seventh member of the Permit-class of attack submarines. She was the second ship of the U.S. Navy, and second submarine, to carry the name.

The contract to build the Haddo was awarded to the New York Shipbuilding Corp. of Camden, N.J. on March 3, 1959. Her keel was laid on Sept. 9, 1960; she was launched on Aug. 18, 1962. She was commissioned on Dec. 16, 1964, with Commander John G. Williams Jr. in command.

Underway

After commissioning, the Haddo joined the ranks of the Atlantic Fleet and Submarine Squadron Four, based in Charleston, S.C. In 1965, the Haddo became the first member of the Permit class to deploy to the Mediterranean Sea in support of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. In 1966, the Haddo was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation; it would receive the Meritorious Unit Commendation a year later. In both 1968 and 1969, the Haddo was awarded the Battle Efficiency “E” for excellence.

After an overhaul was completed in 1970, the Haddo joined the ranks of Submarine Squadron 10, based in New London, Conn. In 1972, she became the first nuclear-powered attack submarine to complete a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean. In August 1973, she returned to dry dock for overhaul and stayed there until December 1975, at which time it was transferred to the Pacific Fleet.

The Haddo joined the ranks of Submarine Squadron Three, based in San Diego, in February 1976. She would be based there for the remainder of her career, making six deployments to the Western Pacific. In 1985, she received another Battlefield Efficiency “E”.  During the winter of 1989-90, the Haddo took part in the largest naval exercise since the end of World War II, Pacex-89.

Decommissioning

The Haddo was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on June 12, 1991. The submarine entered the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at Bremerton, Wash., and on June 20, 1992, was declared scrapped.
