Companies Fined After Failing to Comply with Asbestos Regulations

March 8, 2007 Lancashire, UK - Two companies were fined after failing to take proper safety measures to prevent workers from being exposed to asbestos. The fines arose from a visit by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following a complaint in April 2005 about possible problems at the construction site of a nightclub within the historic Odeon Cinema in Blackpool.

A site inspection found large amounts of asbestos insulation had been disturbed and the site was subsequently closed while a contractor cleaned the site and removed the asbestos.

The fines were issued to In the Pink Leisure Ltd. which runs the "Funny Girls Nightclub" below the site and Eclipse Developments Ltd. which handled construction. Both companies plead guilty in Blackpool Magistrates Court to violating the Health and Safety at Work Act and were fined a total of just over £45,000.

The site had been previously inspected by HSE in January 2002 and both companies were advised on asbestos at the site but failed to utilize the report when they performed work some 3 years later.
