Cancer Treatment and Research at the University of California Irvine Medical Center
The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) at the University of California Irvine (UCI) provides the cancer fighting community with advanced education, treatment, and research programs, and it is the only facility of its type in Orange County. Of the 63 cancer centers in the United States, only 41 are granted the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) accreditation that is awarded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The CFCCC is affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and as is the case with all of the nation's Comprehensive Cancer centers, this university-based approach to the delivery of critical cancer services benefits from an affiliation with a teaching hospital and research facility.
Back in the early 1960s, The NCI pressed for the federal support of a national network of cancer centers that offered advanced and comprehensive cancer services in the areas of treatment, education, and research. The government responded, and in 1971, the National Cancer Act was passed by congress and signed into law by President Nixon. The legislation provided both funding and clearly established accreditation guidelines for the Comprehensive Cancer Centers that were to come, and in 1976, the CFCCC opened the doors to its 449 bed facility.
A full complement of Cancer Services
The CFCCC treats all forms of cancer, and is staffed primarily by faculty members from the School of Medicine. In addition to oncologists, faculty member staff includes: pathologists; surgeons; cancer researchers; radiologists; nurses; pharmacists; rehabilitation therapists; dieticians, and social workers. A number of ancillary programs offer patients individual and family counseling services, hospice affiliations, and various community outreach initiatives.
Clinical Trials
Due to the CFCCC university and medical school affiliations, the Irvine medical complex hosts extensive and wide ranging cancer research programs. As with any teaching hospital or CCC facility, numerous and ongoing clinical trials are conducted at the CFCCC. Clinical trials or studies are used to judge both the safety and effectiveness of new medicines and other therapies, and the opportunity to participate in these trials is offered to a carefully screened group of patients at the Irvine medical complex.
Pediatric Care at the University Children's Hospital
Since opening its doors in 1976, the University Children's Hospital at the CFCCC has provided comprehensive medical care to children of all ages. From prenatal care to treatment for adolescents, pediatric oncologists and cancer specialists of all types offer the unique care required for the treatment of cancer in children. Additionally, due to the close family involvement usually associated with pediatric cancer care, a full spectrum of child and adult counseling and psychosocial services are provided by the CFCCC to help everyone cope more effectively with the oftentimes devastating occurrence of cancer in children.
UCI Health Affairs
UCI Health Affairs involves itself with the clinical and scientific entities, locations, and programs at the UCI, which consists of UCI Healthcare, and the UCI College of Health Sciences and its satellite cancer treatment facilities that include:
- UCI Medical Center: This is the primary inpatient and outpatient care facility, and it is the only teaching hospital in Orange County. Staffed by over 450 faculty member physicians that represent nearly every medical discipline, the facility offers a full suite of acute and general care patient services.
- UCI School of Medicine: This is the chief research and education component of the CFCCC, and it was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 medical schools in the nation when these schools are ranked according to accomplishments in research.
- University Physicians and Surgeons: A faculty organization with a membership of physicians and surgeons who maintain a practice at the UCI Cancer Center and/or a number of satellite treatment facilities throughout Orange County.
- Nursing Science: The UCI Nursing Science Program was established in 2005, and it offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in nursing.
- Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences: The program has offered undergraduate training in pharmaceutical sciences since 2003.
- Program in Public Health: Established in 2003, the program offers undergraduate training in the various disciplines that govern the administration of public health and research practices.
