Flood Damage Exposes Asbestos at Junior High School

Des Plaines, Illinois - Asbestos was discovered at Gemini Junior High School as crews were cleaning up recent flood damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ike.

Asbestos was discovered after crews began removing flood damaged carpet and discovered asbestos was used as part of an adhesive. Work was halted and air within the building was tested to see if asbestos had been released.

Tests revealed that no asbestos was present in the air samples but district officials want to have the material removed to avoid future problems. The East Maine District 63 School Board voted to allow the district Superintendent to meet with local experts and create a removal plan.

Removal is generally more expensive than containment but the district has received verbal confirmation that the state will help with some of the costs. The school is temporarily closed until the asbestos problem has been resolved.
