Youngest asbestos victim dies at the age of 28
Rochdale, UK - A woman believed to be the youngest suffer of mesothelioma in the country has passed away from the asbestos-induced lung cancer at the early age of 28.
No one has been able to figure out how Leigh Carlisle was exposed to asbestos, a substance usually associated with industrial products. Even stranger is how symptoms of the disease developed so early in her life as the effects of asbestos exposure normally takes over 20 years to show up.
One theory is that Ms. Carlisle was exposed to the substance during her early school days in Oldham since old buildings are known to have been constructed with asbestos insulation material installed. Asbestos was widely used in schools throughout the country in the latter part of the twentieth century due to its heat resistant ability and low cost before the substance was banned after scientific evidence showed that it was responsible for several types of illnesses, including the fatal mesothelioma.
Her lawyers have filed a Freedom of Information request with the town council in an attempt to determine if the rooms in which she attended class had had asbestos present.
Turner & Newall, a Rochdale asbestos producer once known to have the largest asbestos factory in the world, was one of the major suppliers that campaigned for the substance's continued use in the 1960s even though information on the health risks associated with asbestos was already available.
As of today, more than 200 former school workers have died or are dying of asbestos-related diseases in the UK.
