Asbestos to be Removed at North Yorkshire Hospital
Workers will begin removing asbestos from the ceiling corridors of Whitby Hospital in North Yorkshire nearly three years after it was discovered.
In May 2005 asbestos was discovered in the ceiling corridors of the 82-bed facility and was also found at hospitals in Malton, Scarborough, and Bridlington. After it was discovered, the staff of all four facilities received health screenings and information on the risks of asbestos exposure.
The project will cost roughly £80,000 (approximate $140,000 USD) and will take up to three months to be completed. The asbestos removal is part of an overall renovation project that will install new equipment and upgrade the hospital's infrastructure.
Asbestos was commonly used in hospitals for insulation of pipes and is still present in many hospitals and schools throughout the UK.
