Arsenal Legend Joins UK Asbestos Awareness Campaign

The Health and Safety Executive has tapped former Arsenal legend Ian Wright to serve as a spokesman for their new asbestos awareness campaign "Asbestos: The Hidden Killer."

The agency says that every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos related diseases caused by occupational exposure to asbestos. Wright who worked as a plasterer before starting his football career said that he was shocked to learn about the high fatality rate which was one of the reasons he joined the campaign.

The campaign is currently running through November and aims to educate workers on the dangers posed by asbestos. The Health and Safety Executive expects the number to go even higher as the number of asbestos disease fatalities is expected to peak in 2020.

The government estimates that asbestos could be present in up to 500,000 non-residential buildings and is likely present in homes built or renovated before 2000. This presents a challenge because as buildings age or require repairs, it is likely the asbestos might be disturbed.

The campaign's official website is located at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/hiddenkiller
