Massage Sessions May Help Reduce Pain for Cancer Patients

A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows massage therapy may help reduce pain in cancer patients.

The study found that patients with advanced cancer who were given gentle massage treatments instantly felt a reduction in pain symptoms and had an improvement in mood.

"Massage does seem to be helpful, at least for a short time," said study leader Dr. Jean S. Kutner of the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.

Although the relief did not last long, researchers believe massage can serve as an aid in lessening pain for patients with advanced cancer and severe pain.

No harmful effects of this therapy were found so it could be a "worthwhile" treatment plan. Kutner stated that individuals who decide to try massage sessions should seek out professionals who have experience working with cancer patients.

In the study 380 patients participated in either massage therapy or "simple touch" sessions. Those who had massage sessions reported a greater improvement in mood and pain but the simple touch group also experienced beneficial results.

Definitive reasons for the effectiveness of massage therapy are not know but some feel the body may release endorphins (mood lifting hormones) when massaged and that massage may help reduce inflammation and reduce muscle spasms.

According to Kutner, individuals with other severe illnesses or less-advanced cancer could also benefit from massage therapy but more studies will have to be completed. In addition to these studies, Kutner would also like to see more research go into the benefits of simple touch, which worked well for patients in this study, and would be easy for non-professionals and even family to perform.

Severely ill patients sometimes do not get the needed physical contact that most people have daily so the simple touch sessions and light massage may go a long way to enhancing both their mental and physical condition.
