AU Asbestos Bill Improves Compensation System
A new bill introduced to the Victorian Parliament will improve compensation and streamline the claims system to assist people suffering from asbestos related diseases.
The "Asbestos Diseases Compensation Bill" will fast track compensation claims if a person's condition deteriorates and will allow those diagnosed with asbestosis to submit a second claim if they go on to develop mesothelioma.
The call for changes to Australia's compensation system was highlighted by asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton who died earlier this year. In his wake, a number of legal reforms have been passed to help victims of asbestos related diseases.
They include:
ACT relatives can now receive compensation after a loved one passes.
Victims can seek more money from parties responsible for their exposure
