Cancer Treatment and Research at the NYU Cancer Institute

Located in the heart of New York City, the New York University Cancer Institute (NYUCI) is recognized as one of the leading patient care and research institutions in the country. The Manhattan-based Cancer Center provides advanced forms of cancer prevention, education, diagnosis, treatment, and research services to the citizens of New York, as well as to individuals from around the nation and the world. The NYUCI treats all forms of adult and childhood cancers using surgical, chemotherapy, and radiological therapies.

The NYUCI's main care and research facility is the NYU Clinical Cancer Center (NYUCCC), which provides patients with a full spectrum of outpatient cancer services. Inpatient and other cancer care services are also provided through the NYUCI partner institutions: the Tisch Hospital; Bellevue Hospital Center; the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders; the Hospital for Joint Diseases, and via the NYUCI's direct affiliation with the New York University School of Medicine, the Langone Medical Center.

A National Network of Cancer Education, Treatment, and Research Centers

As cancer rates continued to rise during the first half of the twentieth century, so, too, did America's awareness of the disease. In recognition of the ever growing problem of cancer in the United States and around the world, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) was established by the federal government in 1937. The NCI, under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the chief cancer research agency in the nation.

In the early 1960s, the NCI sought to establish a national network of cancer centers, and over time, it developed a plan that called for each of these proposed cancer centers to be allied with one of America's top universities. The NCI brought its plan to Congress, and as a result, the National Cancer Act (NCA) was drafted and signed into law in 1971. The NCA provided for the establishment of the 63 National Cancer Centers that are now located in all regions of the country. An NCI Cancer Center accreditation is governed by precise and stringent guidelines that call for the consistent delivery of the most advanced forms of cancer services, and the NYUCI is one of only two such NCI endorsed Cancer Centers in the state of New York.

Cancer Research at the NYU Cancer Institute

Cancer research is a critical component of each of the NCI designated Cancer Centers in the nation, and the research programs at the NYUCI are nationally recognized for their contribution to the nation's ever growing knowledge base about the disease. Staffed by faculty bench (laboratory) and clinical (patient-involved) research scientists and physicians from the NYU School of Medicine, numerous NYU Departments, additional research alliances, and affiliated teaching hospitals, the NYUCI conducts wide ranging scientific investigations into the prevention, cause, and treatment of cancer-with the eventual cure for the disease always in mind. Researchers at the NYUCI are aided by the institution's numerous cancer study affiliations and shared core facilities provided by: the Skirball Institute; the Sackler Institute; Smilow Research Center; the Nelson Institute; the Rusk Institute, and the Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology at NYU. The NYUCI currently organizes its core research programs under the headings briefly summarized below:

Breast Cancer: Genomic and molecular biology studies that attempt to find better ways to prevent, detect, and treat breast cancers though increased knowledge of the cellular mechanisms and systems that promote the presence of malignant disease. These bench and clinical studies attempt to translate new findings into novel therapies to combat breast cancer.
Cancer Immunology: Scientists here focus on increasing their knowledge of the body's own immune system functions with a concentration in lymphocyte (white blood cell) biological studies. These investigations are designed to better understand cancer and lymphocyte interactions within the human immune system.
Environmental and Molecular Carcinogenesis: Interdisciplinary studies that concentrate on the environmental factors that contribute to cancer onset and progression in specific populations. Researchers from numerous fields of scientific investigation combine their findings to develop novel and experimental ways to prevent, treat, and cure cancer.
Genitourinary Cancer: Wide ranging studies of bladder, prostate, and kidney cancer with the goal of developing new ways to improve on current methods of early detection, diagnoses, and the clinical application of chemotherapeutic and other treatments for the disease.
Growth Control: Molecular studies that concentrate on the mechanisms by which healthy cells become cancerous. Wide ranging genetic and molecular biological investigations seek to better understand the cellular and molecular processes that contribute to malignant disease.
Melanoma: Scientists here seek to develop a wider body of knowledge about environmental, genetic, and other risk factors for melanoma (skin cancer) while searching for reliable prognostic (disease progression predictive) markers that will aid oncologists in their treatment of those who have the disease.
Stem Cell Biology: Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that hold tremendous promise for researchers who seek to develop new ways to direct the development of these cells in ways that can be used by translational researchers to develop novel clinical tools to combat cancer.

Patient Care at the NYU Cancer Institute

Patients at the NYUCI can expect to receive state-of-the-art, NCI endorsed treatment for all forms of cancer, either adult or pediatric, at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center, as well as the Cancer Center's partner hospitals located throughout the New York Area. Because of the extensive cancer research programs being conducted the NYUCI and its affiliated partners, a select group of patients at the Cancer Center will be provided with the opportunity to take part in one of the many clinical trials being offered at the NYU institution. These clinical trials are designed to test the overall safety and effectiveness of novel and experimental cancer therapies, and for many patients, participation in these trials in an important and viable treatment option.

In addition to inpatient and outpatient cancer treatments offered by the NYUCI, the Cancer Center also provides all patients and their families with numerous forms of cancer support services such as: professional counseling services that deal with the emotional, psychological, and psychosocial burdens that are often imposed on cancer patients and their families. Pastoral/spiritual, genetic, ethics, and gender specific counseling services are also offered at the NYUCI, as is the participation in disease specific support groups. Additionally, hospice, home care, financial, and community-based cancer resource information is provided by the NYUCI.
