Two London Boroughs Post High Number of Asbestos Deaths
Newham and Tower Hamlets are responsible for some of the worst rates of asbestos related disease deaths in London.
Between 1981 and 2005 Newham recorded 172 deaths as a result of asbestos related diseases while Tower recorded 91 deaths. That gives them a combined total of 263 deaths over the 24-year period.
Both areas are being targeted by the Health and Safety Executive's recent asbestos awareness program which aims to educate tradesmen and the public about the risks of asbestos exposure.
The highest number of deaths within any borough was recorded in the Barking and Dagenham area which had 187 deaths while the lowest number was one, recorded in the city of London area.
