Israel Set to Cleanup Friable Asbestos Waste
The Israeli government has approved a request to allocate 20 million shekels ($5.3 million USD) from the Cleanliness Maintenance Fund to cleanup friable asbestos waste in Western Galilee. The cleanup project aims to remove asbestos from areas contaminated by former industrial plants, illegal disposal and exposed infrastructure and the Environmental Protection Ministry wants to expand the project into a multi-year initiative with costs that could top $100 million USD.
The Knesset Economics Committee approved the request from the Environmental Protection Ministry following a rise in mesothelioma cases in Western Galilee. A survey completed in 2006 by the Western Galilee Association of Towns showed asbestos containing waste was present in a number of public and private sites and one study linked asbestos exposure as one of the reasons that residents of Nahariya have a lung cancer rate that is 10 times the national average.
