Victoria Government Plans Formal Apology for Asbestos Victims
The state government of Victoria will issue a public apology for workers who suffered from asbestos exposure while working for the State Electricity Commission.
Victorian Premier John Brumby made the announcement during the Labor Party's spring state council meeting. "Saying sorry is the right thing to do ... the respectful thing to do," he said during an address to the conference.
Workers at power plants constructed in the Latrobe Valley southeast of Melbourne were exposed to asbestos over a 60-year period between the 1920s and 1980s. There are no statistics on just how many people lost their lives as a result of exposure however Brumby noted that many of those diagnosed with asbestos related diseases were family members of employees who would come home with asbestos fibers on their clothing.
A representative from Gippsland Asbestos Related Disease Support (GARDS) a local organization that has been advocating for asbestos victims, said that the apology would help to bring closure to those who lost family members as a result of asbestos exposure.
State parliament is set to convene in the Latrobe Valley where the formal apology will be made.
