University of Colorado students point to potential asbestos leaks in their building
Boulder, CO - Some students at the University Colorado at Boulder are concerned about the presence of asbestos in some of the campus's old buildings.
College Inn, an undergraduate housing facility, even requires new residents to sign a waiver acknowledging that they have been told about the presence of asbestos in the building's walls. Building administrators say residents are safe as long as holes aren't punctured into the walls.
However, one student reported that he has seen some holes in walls but didn't know if there was asbestos behind those particular walls. Another student mentioned that although asbestos is not a topic normally discussed among her friends, they are aware that it is a serious problem and know about the health effects caused by exposure.
A resident whose grandfather had died from an asbestos-related disease said he didn't entirely trust the staff's reassurances and said the waiver was there for them to cover themselves from a possible lawsuit in the future.
While most students know not to do anything that would cause a hole in any of the building's walls, some say the risk of exposure remains. They pointed out that it seemed as though a new hole was caused every weekend by a drunk student. Although administrators are quick to have the walls fixed once they've been notified, residents are worried about the amount of time the hole remains open between the puncturing of the wall until it is patched up.
There are currently renovations going on for some of the school's buildings and asbestos removal is part of the process. However, university officials say there are no plans yet to abate asbestos from buildings not undergoing renovation due to the amount of time and money that kind of project requires. They added that campus buildings are tested several times a year for asbestos levels and that none of the tests so far have suggested that students' health are at risk.
