Scottish leaders support asbestos campaign in hopes of reducing deaths
Scotland, UK - An asbestos-related lung cancer has recently been blamed for the deaths of hundreds of people in Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothians.
The Health and Safety Executive is currently running a campaign, titled "Asbestos: The Hidden Killer", with the mission of generating more awareness of the deadly material to prevent further deaths. As part of the campaign, the HSE released new statistics which revealed that about 530 people from those areas combined died as a result of suffering from mesothelioma. The campaign will last until the middle of November.
Backing the campaign is Jim Murphy, Scotland's Secretary of State, who reported that he was very surprised to hear there is currently a yearly increase in the death rate from the asbestos disease. He said the numbers weren't just statistics; they represented the human lives that tragically were taken away and families that had to cope with the loss.
He added that anything that could be done to decrease the death rates is welcomed and that the occupational safety of the country's workers was a high priority. Mr. Murphy said these were facts were simple to understand so everyone should take part in spreading the word out to all tradesmen.
The head of HSE's asbestos licensing unit, Greg Haywood, said tradesmen need to be educated on how asbestos presents a danger to them in their work. That, he said, would change the way they approached work so they wouldn't become affected by the material. He mentioned that asbestos was responsible for more work related deaths than any other factors.
