Sunderland, UK death rate from asbestos-related diseases on the rise

Sunderland, UK - The Health and Safety Executive has just released a shocking statistic about the city of Sunderland and the effect that asbestos has had on it.

According to the HSE, 387 people from the city have died from asbestos-related causes since 1981.

Sunderland is ranked in the top 20 for places in the United Kingdom with the highest death rates from the asbestos-related lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma. From the North East alone, the disease has claimed the lives of over 2,300 people. Across the country, on average 20 tradesmen die weekly from illnesses brought on by asbestos .

Asbestos experts say they believe that asbestos could be present in any building constructed before 2000. The death rate is expected to rise as figures have estimated that around half a million non-domestic buildings may contain the hazardous material. The number serves as a warning to workers that they should be cautious every time they begin a new project because of the risk of inhaling the potentially deadly fibers.

The HSE is currently running a campaign through the end of November aimed at spreading awareness of the facts on asbestos with the goal reducing the numbers of deaths from this very avoidable substance. A common belief, which is untrue and dangerous, is that people no longer have to be concerned about asbestos because it was banned decades ago. The HSE hopes to educate the general public but especially tradesmen who are most at risk of coming into contact with asbestos.

Chris Gillies, the HSE principal inspector for the North East, said workers need to understand why the dangers of asbestos pertains to them.
