University of North Carolina (UNC) Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, located at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) is North Carolina's only public, National Cancer Institute- (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCC).

A CCC designation is awarded to only those institutions offering advanced cancer research and treatment services. These cancer services are a direct result of the National Cancer Act of 1971, directed at addressing the need for comprehensive cancer services and up-to-date research initiatives. These National Cancer Institute-designated facilities undergo comprehensive reviews to ensure continued compliance with federally established standards for cancer patient care and research.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is a matrix cancer center which achieved National Cancer Institute designation in 1975 and became a Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1990. The Center treats all types of cancer, including all the subsets of lung cancer - particularly adult and childhood mesothelioma (asbestos-related lung cancer).

The Thoracic Oncology Program at UNC Lineberger offers a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment through various specialists in the fields of pulmonary medicine, surgery, medical and radiation oncology, thoracic oncology, pathology, and oncology nursing. Treating chest-related esophageal cancer, small cell and non-small cell lung cancer, mesothelioma, pleuropulmonary blastoma, and thyroid cancers (thymoma and thymic carcinoma), UNC Lineberger provides the paradigm in diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, and medical and radiation therapies.

UNC Lineberger is one of three institutions in the Southeast offering a Light-Induced Fluorescence Endoscope (LIFE), which allows specialists to study the natural history and molecular biology of pre-malignant lesions. Additionally, UNC is one of only 12 institutions in the nation equipped for CT-Fluoroscopy, which allows for the real-time acquisition and display of cross-sectional images - a medical imaging technique UNC pioneered.

In addition to surgical, chemical and radiation therapies, UNC Lineberger CCC also conducts ongoing clinical trials for cancer treatment and prevention via nine scientific programs and 23 shared resources involving more than 250 investigators from across the entire UNC Chapel Hill campus. These research programs focus on:

UNC Lineberger conducts 13 separate clinical care programs:
