Asbestos to be removed from 58 story building.

PARIS- Le Tour Montparnasse (The Montparnasse Tower) a 58 story landmark in Paris historical southwest district is going to undergo complete asbestos removal beginning early next year.

The tower is the tallest building in Paris and receives over half a million visitors every year.

The near 150 million dollar project is a response to growing calls by protest groups as well as a technical assessment that was just completed. The removal will be done in conjunction with a plan to modernize the building as well.

Opened in 1972 the tower has become an icon of the artistic Montparnasse district and removal and renovations should be complete by 2009.
