USS Marvin Shields (DE/FF-1066): History, Patrols, Crews

Commissioning

The USS Marvin Shields was the 15th member of the Knox class of escort destroyers (and later, frigates). She was named in honor of the only Seabee to win the Medal of Honor. Shields, who was killed in action on June 10, 1965, was also the first Navy sailor to win the Medal of Honor in Vietnam.

The order to build the Marvin Shields was awarded to the Todd Pacific Shipyards of Seattle on June 22, 1964. Her keel was laid on April 12, 1968; she was launched on Oct. 23, 1969. She was commissioned on April 10, 1971.

Underway

The Shields’ only deployment to a combat zone came in 1990-91, when it was deployed to the Persian Gulf. There, it joined a large naval task force that was part of Operation Desert Shield, a response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990. Desert Shield became Desert Storm on Jan. 17, 1991, when the liberation of Kuwait began. The crew of the Shields received the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the ship was awarded the Navy Unit Citation.

Though it was commissioned as a destroyer escort, the Marvin Shields retired from U.S. service as a frigate. The Shields, along with all other members of the Knox class, was re-classified as a frigate on June 30, 1975. Its designation was then changed from DE-1066 to FF-1066.

Decommissioning

The Shields was decommissioned on July 2, 1992 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on Jan. 11, 1995. It was later sold to Mexico Navy, where it continues to serve as the ARM Abasolo.
