Eligibility and Registration for VHA Care

All veterans, both male and female, are potentially eligible to receive VA health care benefits. For most veterans, this eligibility is based solely on their active military service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine (World War II), and on a discharge rating of other than dishonorable. Reservists and National Guard members called to active duty by a Federal Executive Order may also qualify for health care benefits. Health care benefits are not limited to those who have served in combat.

Once you have located the VHA facility nearest you, the staff will help determine your eligibility. Following is a short overview of the registration process.

You will be asked if you have been to the VHA facility at that location before, if you are currently enrolled at another VHA facility for primary care and if you have been to another VHA facility for health care in the past. If you answer “Yes” to any of these questions, the staff will run an inquiry to ensure that you are not currently registered within that local system. If you are not, you will begin the registration process that day. You will be given an application form, and a staff member will assist you in filling in the necessary information. You should bring a copy of your DD214 to be included with your application.

If you wish to request an appointment at the same time you register, you may do so; it is not necessary to wait until your enrollment is confirmed. At the time your application is processed, an appointment will be scheduled for you, and you will be notified in writing of your eligibility for medical care and your appointment.

There is no monthly premium required for VHA care, however, you may have to agree to co-pays. If you have insurance, the cost of these co-pays may be covered. There are also circumstances that will eliminate co-pays and fees. Ask a staff member to explain these circumstances to you to determine if you qualify. At the time of your enrollment confirmation and Priority Group assignment, you will receive information regarding your particular co-pay status.
