The Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), established in 1983, is a large, nationwide network that ensures that cancer patients have access to medical care in their own communities. Through the CCOP network, community physicians work in conjunction with scientists to conduct clinical trials supported by the National Cancer Institute. By working together, the latest research is transferred to the local level and quality care is provided to participating communities. The CCOP network also increases the number of patients and physicians who can participate in clinical trials and allows researchers to conduct the large-scale cancer treatment trials necessary for the ultimate approval of new drugs.
The CCOP network has been instrumental in recruiting new patients for clinical trials, and currently one-third of all patients involved in NCI-sponsored trials are recruited through the CCOP system.
