Norwich asbestos death rate expected to increase

Norwich, Norfolk, UK - Medical data show that 30 people in Norwich die each year of asbestos-related illnesses, and on Wednesday experts warned that the number is expected to rise by 2012.

A Greater Norfolk coroner has confirmed that about 30 people are dying each year as a result of asbestos-related illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, caused by exposure to the hazardous substance. Mesothelioma, which typically takes decades to appear after exposure, is a cancer which constricts the lung and creates tumors that limits a person's ability to breathe.

Godfrey Morgan, an asbestos expert, said he believes the peak of asbestos deaths will occur between 2012 and 2015 as people who worked with or in the presence of asbestos 25 to 40 years ago are now feeling the effects of the deadly fibers. He added that asbestos claims the lives of 2,000 to 3,000 people in the country annually, but the figure could rise to 5,000.

Decades earlier, information about the dangers of asbestos were not as readily available and discussed as they are now so there were less concerns about handling asbestos, with many people not wearing protective equipment when in the presence of the substance. The tradesmen most at risk for becoming diagnosed are former asbestos sprayers, carpenters, boiler laggers and central heating engineers.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, asbestos still accounts for more work-related deaths than any other reason.
