Asbestos discovery caused elementary school to close for a week

Swea City, IA - After an asbestos scare at an elementary caused the cancellation of classes for a week, asbestos experts met with parents and school employees Monday to discuss the final results of their testing.

Classes were cancelled last week when the first of a series of air quality tests showed very high levels of asbestos at North Kossuth Elementary. However, the three tests that followed to confirm its presence could find no sign of the deadly substance.

The experts spoke with the parents to alleviate their fears and explain the asbestos situation. Parents asked the many questions that had been on their mind for the entire week, and school administrators addressed all of them.

The school administrators, some who had children of their own attending the school, assured parents that the environment was healthy and that the kids were not at risk for exposure. Parents were also educated on their high-tech testing procedures that were performed to check for asbestos fibers in the air.

Although the parents were pleased with what had been done to deal with the asbestos problem, some turned their attention to mold found at the school. However, the county health department told them the amount of mold was minimal and not a cause for a concern.

The parents said their kids had enjoyed their time off from school but were also excited about reuniting with their friends before the start of summer vacation, which is only days away.
