Asbestos found on the site of a future high school

American Canyon, CA - American Canyon High School officials confirmed Friday that naturally-occurring asbestos had been found on the site of the school currently being built and assured everyone that plans are in place to remove it.

The asbestos problem, found in April 2007, is not expected to delay the new high school's construction which is scheduled to begin in May and is expected to be completed in time for the school to open in the fall of 2010.

District officials said they didn't know the area contained naturally-occurring asbestos in the soil and rocks when they purchased the land.

Almost 2,000 cubic yards of earth materials containing the deadly substance will be moved temporarily to an adjacent 17-acre site also owned by the district where a middle school is planned to be constructed. Don Evans, the director of school planning and construction for the Napa Valley Unified School District, announced that the cleanup will be performed with guidance from the Department of Toxic Substances Control.

The asbestos removal project will be carefully contained and monitored until plans to dispose of the material are finalized by the district's environmental consultant.

Mr. Evans said it's difficult to estimate the cost of the entire cleanup at this early stage. The contractor in charge of stockpiling the asbestos-tainted material on the adjacent site said the cost for that alone was $15,000.

The city is planning to build a 2 million-gallon water tank to be used for the school and a nearby future residential and commercial development.
