Asbestos found at a child welfare services building
Baltimore, MD - Workers have alerted health and safety officials after discovering asbestos at a child welfare services building over the weekend.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the union that represent state workers, announced that maintenance workers contracted to do work at the building found what they believe to be exposed asbestos on pipes and alerted state officials Monday morning. A union spokesman said they had no additional information because the meeting that was supposed to have been held today to discuss the matter got postponed twice and was ultimately cancelled.
It is estimated that about 350 employees and countless children who have visited the building may have been exposed to the deadly substance. Research has proven that even minimal exposure to asbestos can result in serious illnesses, including terminal lung and abdominal cancer for which there is no cure; however, the effects cannot be diagnosed until decades after the person has breathed in the toxic fibers.
The employees of the child welfare services building have contacted the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MOSH) and notified the authorities of the situation in an attempt to push for an investigation into the matter.
This isn't the first time the employees have complained about health issues at the building. Last summer, they filed a MOSH complaint regarding a serious rat problem and ongoing water leaks which led to the agency ordering the building's administrators to exterminate the rodents.
At the moment administrators have not replied to requests for comment on the asbestos issue
