Retired tradesman dies from asbestos-related disease
Crewe, Cheshire, UK - A state investigation has revealed that a retired man passed away last year from an asbestos-related disease caused by exposure he received when he was a teenager.
Denis Bateman, a former Crewe Works railway fitter, died at Leighton Hospital last August suffering from chronic respiratory failure. The formal investigation learned that the 81 year old had been exposed to asbestos in the 1940s while working for Crewe Works.
Before he passed away, Mr. Bateman said in a statement to his lawyer it was impossible to avoid the asbestos. The deadly substance was used in the works, especially in insulation materials. He described the environment as looking like feathers were floating everywhere since there were so many asbestos fibers in the air.
He was almost always in contact with asbestos but was not aware of the dangers associated with it at the time. Workers were always sweeping it up and causing it to spread so the employees couldn't help but inhale the dust.
Mr. Bateman spent his entire career working for Crewe Works before retiring at the age of 61. He had worked in many different departments at the company through the years.
His post mortem exam showed that he had suffered from respiratory failure which was likely caused by asbestosis. The coroner recorded the verdict of Mr. Bateman's death as by an industrial disease.
His wife, Eileen, passed away the day before he did.
