UK: Illegal asbestos dumping at a skip site
Angus, UK - Council members are raising concerns over the illegal dumping of asbestos at the Edzell skip site.
At the Inveresk Community Council meeting on Monday, Edzell representative Iain Rae said the site has really become a mess in recent weeks and is in urgent need of a cleanup. He mentioned that all of the large open-topped containers are either full or overflowing, causing adjacent areas to become cluttered as well. Members of the public in attendance also complained about the overall mess of the skip site.
One possible cause of the overflow problem was brought up. Although the skip site does not allow for the dumping of asbestos and has signs clearly posted up that explain the rule, an incident recently occurred where a large amount of asbestos was dropped off at the site.
The Angus Council has had the asbestos removed by one of the only two licensed contractors in the county. Since the county has no site approved for storing the hazardous waste, it was transferred to a landfill in Perthshire.
Angus Council leader, Bob Myles, asked for help from the local media that were at the meeting to report on the asbestos problem and ask the public to contact the council if they knew who was doing the illegal dumping. He suggested that the guilty party may not have been aware of the ban on asbestos dumping at the site.
The Inveresk Community Council will continue to keep an eye on the situation and hope it will see improvements to the site soon.
