Abandoned building finally receives asbestos removal and redevelopment
St. George, Bermuda- The long-abandoned former Club Med site in Bermuda is set to undergo asbestos abatement to make way for redevelopment plans that local residents have been looking forward to for two decades.
St. George residents frustrated by the unsightly building, unused since 1988, will finally get their wish. Minister Derrick Burgess announced that an asbestos contractor from North Carolina had been awarded the contract for the asbestos cleanup of the ten-story building.
Once the removal of the hazardous substance is completed, the demolition phase of the project will take place which calls for an implosion of the facility. He stressed that all asbestos-containing materials will be removed before the demolition occurs.
He assured the House of Assembly that health and safety concerns related to the implosion expressed by nearby residents are unsubstantiated.
Mr. Burgess said that an engineering and architectural consultant company from Ohio will be overseeing the demolition of the structure to ensure it is done safely.
He added that the public safety is of the highest importance to the government.
Representatives from the asbestos contractor will personally meet with every household in the Club Med area to discuss and alleviate residents' concerns by explaining the measures the company is taking to ensure their safety.
After it is removed, the asbestos will be transferred to a Ministry of Health-approved government quarry for storage.
Once the demolition project is complete, the site will be handed over to a developer at the end of the year. The developer plans to build on the land a Park Hyatt hotel, residence complex and golf course, a redevelopment project expected to cost several millions of dollars.
