Ohio EPA frustrated over company's repeated asbestos violations

Lisbon, OH - The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) has filed a request with the attorney general's office to deny A&L Salvage of its operating license after not being able to reach an agreement with the company, which has received numerous notices of safety violations.

After a year of talks with A&L not going anywhere, OEPA is tired of dealing with the company and has asked the attorney general's office to take action. A&L has received 23 violation notices in its six years of operations, causing concern to the OEPA for the health and safety of local residents.

The agency is in possessing of videos that show A&L employees operating heavy machinery pushing bags containing what looks like asbestos-containing materials. In the videos, the machines run over the bags, popping them and releasing the contents into the air. Other examples of waste violations are documented in the videos also according to the agency.

OEPA Director Chris Korleski said he is shocked at how a company that has been under close scrutiny by the agency and neighborhood residents and facing legal proceedings could continue to operate in that manner. He added that a resident has reported to the agency of unknown dust covering his backyard, causing his family fear of going outside.

Many residents have also complained about a strange gas smell and have expressed concerns over the company's asbestos disposal methods and after-hours dumping.

Mr. Korleski said the state has been more than patient with A&L to work towards a getting the company to be compliance with safety regulations but A&L has yet to show improvement.
