People unite in fight against asbestos

Detroit, MI – People suffering from asbestos-related illnesses and their families are blaming politicians and aggressive asbestos lobbyists for the substance’s still legal use in the United States.

These sentiments are expressed by Dwayne Manuel, whose father died from mesothelioma, a disease Dwayne insists would be preventable if the government ever chooses to completely ban the deadly substance. The current asbestos ban is an incomplete one, allowing for the use of products containing less than one percent asbestos.

Andrew Manuel’s symptoms started off as minor back pains but dramatically worsened in the span of two years. The father of three lost 65 pounds, underwent an operation to remove one his lungs and went through chemotherapy and radiation treatments without success. He passed away at the age of 42.

His wife, Latanyta Manuel, was shocked when he was diagnosed with lung cancer because she knew he never smoked or drank. She was told the cause of the cancer was exposure to asbestos.

It is suspected that Mr. Manuel experienced second-hand exposure to asbestos from his father, who worked in a pipeline and came home with asbestos fibers on his clothes.

At an annual remembrance lunch in honor of victims, alive and deceased, of asbestos-related conditions hosted by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) and Karmanos Cancer Institute, victims and their loved ones gathered to support each other and spread awareness of the problem.

A recent study conducted by the ADAO tested 250 products found on store shelves for asbestos. Three different lab tests were performed on the products, with varying results. One found that 18 products contained asbestos, another showed eight, and the third showed five.

The event’s attendees said the general public needs to be more aware of the current asbestos problem that the nation faces.
