Retired drywaller will die as a result of asbestos exposure
Calgary, Canda – A retired drywaller is expected to pass away this week from lung cancer, suspected to be mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos.
Edgar Blouin, now 64 years old, experienced a collapsed lung last Friday and doctors have told him he has less than a week to live. His other lung is currently doing the work for two, which is putting a strain on his heart.
Doctors discovered three years ago that he had lung cancer after an x-ray test was ran on him during an office visit for pneumonia. He underwent multiple radiation and chemo treatments the during first year after finding out, and at one time, he even went into remission, a state of absence of disease activity in patients with chronic illnesses, although the possibility of the activity’s return existed.
When he was only 13, Edgar began working with his dad, who was a plasterer. At the time, although everyone knew the materials they were working contained asbestos, they had no idea about the dangers associated with the substance. He used to cut asbestos boards for walls with a skillsaw, and dust from the boards would fly all around them. Sometimes the air was white with dust containing the asbestos fibers, but no one wore protective masks.
Edgar’s younger brother, who joined the men later on, had also developed mesothelioma and passed away 15 years ago. His family believes Edgar is suffering from the same condition but do not wish to subject him to anymore testing. They will learn the truth soon anyway.
Edgar chose not to sue his employers who he has worked for for 25 years. He enjoyed his work and even decided to continue to go back to work for a while, even though he knew his work was what was responsible for his health. He finally filed a form of disability last December and stopped working completely.
Edgar’s heart is expected to stop beating this week, and his family prays that he’ll pass away with no pain.
