A profile of a leader in the fight against asbestos

Detroit, MI – Linda Reinstein never thought she would be where she is today – leading an international non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the awareness of asbestos and campaign for a ban on its production globally.

Ms. Reinstein co-founded the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), a non-profit that is operated by its all volunteer membership which acts as a voice for asbestos victims and their families. She currently also serves as the organization’s executive director.

Alan Reinstein, her husband and former president of ADAO, was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the age of 63 and suffered for three years before he passed away from the illness. He had been exposed to asbestos 50 years earlier from his work as well as doing home repairs.

The ADAO has partnered with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat to host the fourth annual Asbestos Awareness Day Conference on March 29, kicking off the beginning of Asbestos Awareness Week. Renowned asbestos experts from around the world will be attending the international conference. The goals of the conference are to help educate the public about the dangers associated with the substance, promote the ban of asbestos use and push for more scientific research to improve treatment options.

Ms. Reinstein spoke proudly of her husband, telling others how he never complained about how much he was suffering and instead, chose to focus on living the remainder of his life to the fullest extent his illness allowed for.
