Day care business forced to relocate due to asbestos and lead paint
Raleigh, NC – A day care business now has to relocate because the building which it has been operating in is closing due to safety concerns about the presence of asbestos.
New Bern Avenue Day Care Center’s director, Alyssa Strayhorn, is currently looking for a new location for the family-oriented business, which has been running for 40 years. Her mother served as director before her for 34 years. The day care’s current building, located on the corner of Edenton and Tarboro, is in need of some asbestos and lead paint removal work.
The City of Raleigh, which owns the building, discovered the asbestos and lead paint in April 2007 when its workers were fixing the building’s heating system. The materials posed no immediate risk, but the city wanted to take precautionary measures to prevent health risks.
Ms. Strayhorn was notified promptly and given six months to find a new building for the day care. She was also given an additional five-month extension because the city didn’t want to disrupt the lives of the day care’s children and their families. However, after eleven months of waiting, the city wants the owner to move out immediately for the safety of the children.
Parents of the children who attend the day care are sad over the news of the move. Many of the families live only about 15 minutes away from the building and will be very inconvenienced by the move.
Some say they will not be able to take their kids to a different location if it’s too far away. Others intend to keep bringing their children to Ms. Strayhorn’s business regardless of where she relocates because the business has treated them and their kids exceptionally.
