Asbestos discovery at California school results in many being fired
Lodi, CA – The discovery of asbestos at an elementary school has resulted in mass confusion and chaos.
Several board members have stepped down or been fired and the Mokelumne River School principal, Nadine, Zerbe, was asked to resign after school officials found out that asbestos was present in the building. About 100 parents, teachers, and community members gathered at a meeting to discuss how the situation had been handled by the school’s administrators.
Four former board members and one remaining member are accusing the school board’s president, Clifford Goehring, of failing to give parents, students, and board members early notice that there was an asbestos problem at the school.
Mr. Goehring acknowledged on February 26 that workers had been hired to fix a possible asbestos leak. He was also invited to the by the former board members but did not show up.
The four ex-board members met with Mr. Goehring last week and asked him to resign because they felt he was not performing his job properly. However, they said he fired them a few days later and replaced them with new people.
The meeting, which lasted two and a half hours, consisted of parents listening to the former board members, offering suggestions, and signing a petition that demanded the four be given their positions back.
The school’s superintendent, who was not at the meeting, has said that the cleanup process was going well and students should be able to return to classes within two weeks as long as air quality tests prove that it is safe to do so.
