Suspected arson attacks cause the release of asbestos
Carlisle, Cumbria, UK - Last week roads were sealed off, and police officers urged people to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed after a string of suspected arson attacks raised concerns about the possible release of cancer-causing asbestos.
For the next several days, the police department brought in additional policemen to patrol the area around the British Rail warehouse in central Carlisle that was engulfed in flames. Officers suspected that the fire was caused by arsonists.
Three separate incidents had occurred at the site, one on Friday May 23 and the other two last Tuesday, causing officers to believe that the incidents were linked.
The fire on Friday at the former railway sheds led to the evacuation of many residents and the closing of certain roads near the building. Although no one was evacuated on Tuesday, roads were closed again and residents were warned to shut their doors and windows to safeguard against possible asbestos fibers being released by the building fire.
The police department said it was working with the owners of the building and environmental experts to clean up the site and ensure that it would be made safe quickly. They made it an important point that the public should stay away from the site for their own safety.
On Tuesday, Firefighters were called to the scene just after 6pm and again shortly after 11pm.
