Marston to Replace Asbestos Water Pipes

Marston, Missouri - The city of Marston will replace aging water pipes made with asbestos cement to accommodate for the town's recent growth. The pipes consist of transite asbestos cement and were originally installed in the mid-1960s.

Over the years the pipes have become brittle and numerous leaks from the pipes have not been repaired because workers feared that they would encounter major problems attempting to attach pvc fittings to the aging pipes.

Marston will replace all existing water lines with new pipes and redesign their water system with a new well and backup system.

The city has not reported any problems with asbestos in the water supply like those of Richland, Georgia where asbestos fibers were literally clogging water filters. There is little research on the effects of ingesting asbestos but the EPA advises that it could lead to stomach, colon and kideny cancer.
