UK Elderly home evacuated following the discovery of asbestos
Doncaster, UK - Elderly residents were forced to evacuate their homes in a matter of minutes after asbestos was discovered in their flats complex.
Thirty-four people, some of them in their 80s and 90s, living at St. Leger Homes had to pack up and leave their homes after contractors working on the property found the hazardous material. Doncaster Council has put them up in temporary emergency accommodations while they wait to learn when it would be safe to return.
Some family members complained that the rush was traumatic for the elderly residents, but the council maintained that it was necessary for their safety.
On Tuesday, soffits were damaged as workers were replacing windows and asbestos became exposed. It was confirmed that both brown and white asbestos were present in the fixtures of six flats. However, air quality tests showed no signs of asbestos fibers.
An emergency meeting took place to coordinate the evacuation. Residents were taken to a day care center while officials worked to find alternative accommodations.
Most of the evacuees have chosen to stay with friends and family and the rest have been put up at either a Regent Hotel or a respite center for those with special needs.
The 28 flats that were sealed off for testing and cleaning are being patrolled by police to protect the properties and belongings within. Security cameras have also been set up.
The council has been advised by health professionals who confirmed there is a low risk of exposure, but the council and St. Leger's property managers said they want to take all precautions possible.
