59th Case of Mesothelioma Identified Among Minnesota Miners
The Minnesota Department of Health has identified a 59th case of mesothelioma among Iron Range miners.
The case was discovered when profiles for 72,000 miners were matched against the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System, the state's cancer registry. It was able to identify the additional case but no information about that person or their condition has been released.
The 72,000 miners worked in the Iron Range mines between the 1930s and 1982 and are the subject of a $4.9 million study to determine whether there is a relationship between taconite dust exposure and mesothelioma.
Between 1988 and 1996, seventeen miners were diagnosed with mesothelioma and in March 2007 it was revealed that 35 additional miners had died from the disease. Controversy erupted because it was revealed that the health department waited a year before releasing the information.
