Mother and son die of mesothelioma
Ilford, Essex, UK - It has been learned that an elderly woman recently died from an asbestos-related cancer, only three years after one of her sons passed away from the same disease.
Joan Squires, 92, who suffered from malignant mesothelioma passed away on April 8 from the asbestos-caused lung cancer. Her son, John, died a few years earlier from the illness at the age of 59.
Strangely, Mrs. Squires had worked with the hazardous material during her career. She was a retired clerical worker.
John's brother, Howard, told the coroner's court that the two may have been exposed to asbestos fibers while working to fix an old storage heater at their home during the early 1970s. He said he had thought at the time that it would've been better for them to replace the heater with a new one instead of dismantling and fixing it.
Another theory he has is that John, who worked as an electrical engineer, may have brought the deadly fibers home on his work clothes.
Mrs. Squires discovered that she had developed the disease on March 18 of this year when she had to be admitted into Whipps Cross Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties. Doctors diagnosed her with the fatal cancer following a scan where they found a gray shading on her lung.
She passed away at Margaret Centre hospice where she was transferred from Whipps.
Howard Squires said his mother was perfectly healthy before the Christmas season came. Once she started experiencing symptoms, the disease progressed quickly. He said he felt it was better that she passed away early so she did not have to suffer for long.
