Ranpirnase and Doxorubicin Form Effective Second Line Treatment for Malignant Mesothelioma
A new study found that combining ranpirnase and doxorubicin as a second line treatment for patients with unresectable malignant mesothelioma was able to extend their lives.
The phase 3 trial compared the efficacy of ranpirnase and doxorubicin with that of doxorubicin alone in 432 patients with (UMM). The study, organized by Dr. Martin Reck of Hospital Grosshansdorf in Germany, required patients had an ECOG score of 0 to 1 and up to one previous line of treatment. The study found that there was no significant difference between the therapies as the median survival for doxorubicin and ranpirnase was 11.1 months versus 10.7 months for doxorubicin and placebo.
However they concluded that doxorubicin and ranpirnase formed an effective second line treatment because 130 patients who had already undergone chemotherapy had a median survival of 10.5 months compared to 9 months for patients receiving a placebo. Doctors would like to confirm the efficacy of ranpirnase by combining it with Alimta (pemetrexed) in a future trial for second line treatment.
