Iron Range Mesothelioma Study Set to Begin

In the next few weeks, researchers from the University of Minnesota will begin sending out letters to current and former Iron Range miners as part of a study to determine whether taconite can cause mesothelioma.

Researchers are looking for 2000 miners and their spouses to participate in the study and hope to get 1200 miners and 800 spouses to determine whether taconite fibers are responsible for the abnormally large number of mesothelioma cases.

They will begin selecting participants at random and sending letters about the study. Those who wish to participate will be asked to contact the Virginia Regional Medical Center and schedule an appointment.

The examination will include breathing tests, chest x-ray and physical. Participants will receive the results after about a month and their medical data will be kept confidential.
