Activists stage demonstration to support pleural plaques victims
Asbestos activists staged a demonstration this morning in South Shields, the city with the fourth-highest rate of asbestos death in England and Wales, as part of a national campaign targeting the constituencies of Cabinet ministers.
Union leaders from the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians are concerned that the government will not overturn a recent Law Lords' ruling which robbed victims of pleural plaques their right to seek compensation.
The condition is a scarring of the lung tissue caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers, which could lead to the life-threatening disease, mesothelioma. Although pleural plaque victims do not know for certain that they will develop mesothelioma, they suffer from the constant fear that is associated with it.
It's been said that neighboring Scotland plans to overturn the decision before the end of the year, and England activists feels that their people should be entitled to the same right. Campaigners said they're demonstrating to raise awareness of pleural plaques.
This week, both South Shields MP and Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Hebburn MP Stephen Hepburn have applied pressure on the government by renewing their calls for justice for pleural plaques victims.
Due to the South Shield MP's continued representation on behalf of his constituents, Business Minister Bridget Prentice has contacted Mr. Miliband to notify him that a consultation document has been published on the condition.
Mr. Miliband said that after reviewing the document, he believes the Government is trying to find a way to help pleural plaques sufferers. He urged victims to contact the Government and provide their input on the matter.
