Family of deceased UNISON member wins compensation case

London, England, UK - A court has awarded the family of a deceased UNISON member over £140,000 in compensation as a result of him passing away from the asbestos-related disease mesothelioma.

According to his family, Jim Crowe was exposed to asbestos while working for the Greater London Council (GLC) between 1968 and 1971 and also while employed at the Haringey Council between 1972 and 1988. At both jobs, he was in charge of supervising workers who handled asbestos.

It was said that he was never provided with protective equipment by his either of his employers even though he regularly expressed to them his concerns about the health and safety of the working conditions.

Jim died in June 2007 at the age of 79 and is survived by his wife, Tess, four children and four grandchildren. His daughter, Anita, said he was healthy and in good shape until he developed the disease. She described him as a passionate gardener and a talented person at odd jobs who used his skills to help out everyone in his family.

However, because of the effects of mesothelioma, she said he lost the energy and ability to do any physical work during the last eight years of his life.

Jim wanted to pursue compensation for his expected death because he wanted to make sure his family was taken cared of after he was gone. He was able to do it with financial assistance from UNISON.

He's remembered as a loving family man and a worker who fought to get safer working conditions for his colleagues.
