Austrailia: Dubbo City Council denies the presence of asbestos

The Dubbo City Council is denying the earlier claim by a council whistleblower that loose asbestos is present under the civic center stage.

Although the person sent pictures of a white powder on the ground and on boxes under the stage, the council said the material isn't actually asbestos. They claimed they've known about the dust for a while now and that nothing has been done about it.

Mayor Greg Matthews confirmed that the substance was not asbestos, although the identity of it is still unknown.

The center was closed earlier due to the initial asbestos scare but has now been reopened following results from air quality tests that showed no signs of asbestos presence under the stage.

Mayor Matthews said the risk assessor didn't find any signs of loose asbestos but the building will continue to be closely monitored as a precautionary measure. He added that his office is currently working alongside WorkCover on a plan to remove the asbestos.

However, he maintains that the white powder under the stage and in the photos sent to reporters was not asbestos. About 20 different powdery substances were tested and the only loose asbestos found was in sites above the stage and not under it. The only asbestos found under the stage was covered in fiberglass and was determine to not be a health risk.
