Nahariya Residents 10 Times More Likely to Get Lung Cancer

Nahariya, a small resort town on the northern coast of Israel is dealing with a lung cancer epidemic. According to a government health official, the rate of lung cancer is 10 times the national per capita average.

We first reported on the situation in Nahariya in February of this year (Asbestos Discovered in Dozens of Public Areas) and now residents sickened by asbestos exposure highlight the urgent need for remediation. Asbestos can be found throughout Western Galilee especially Nahariya and this been the main factor behind the region's unprecedented mesothelioma rates.

Our earlier report mentioned 11 sites in urgent need of containment but according to complaints by local officials, money set aside to help cleanup the estimated 70 to 150 thousand cubic meters of asbestos has not been allocated. The reason is that it was earmarked for sites that were found not to contain asbestos.

In response the Internal Affairs Committee has decided to establish a special panel to address the area's asbestos problem.
