Company owner faces felony charges for illegally handling asbestos
Aurora, CO - The owner of a home and apartment remodeling company is facing four felony charges for removing and dumping of asbestos without proper permits and also for allegedly attempting to bribe a witness.
According to the indictment, Richard Oliver, owner of Kingston Properties LLC, had illegally removed and disposed the highly hazardous material from four properties during the first half of 2008. Furthermore, the legal document claims Oliver had disposed of the asbestos in a regular trash receptacle.
The indictment also said that although he was aware of the possibility of asbestos being present at the properties, Oliver knowingly placed three of his employees in danger by concealing the truth from them and failing to provide them with proper protective equipment.
A contractor has come forward saying that Oliver had threatened to "hire a bunch of Mexicans" to perform the job for less than what the contractor had proposed.
In response, Oliver has denied all of the allegations, saying that they were made by a disgruntled employee he had fired. He added that tests from the properties showed either insignificant or no amounts of asbestos and that he was at the properties as well so he would have been among those exposed to asbestos if there had truly been any present.
He also denied saying anything about hiring Mexicans to handle asbestos.
According to the indictment, Oliver had also tried to bribe one of his employees to lie to a grand jury by blaming the asbestos dumping on the contractor who had filed the complaint against him.
If found guilty, Oliver could be sentenced to 18 years in jail.
