Study Bolsters Argument for Treating Cancer-Related Fatigue With Exercise
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms associated with the treatment of cancer. While exercise has long been hypothesized as a possible way to reduce fatigue in cancer patients, previous studies have yet to definitively prove that physical activity reduces fatigue.
However, a recent study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews has led to researchers concluding that there is, in fact, a measurable positive outcome of treating cancer-related fatigue with aerobic exercise.
More than 2,000 participants took place in the 28 separate studies. Those who were required to undergo physical activity both during and after cancer therapy were statistically less affected by fatigue at a 95 percent Confidence Interval (CI).
The majority of the participants in the study were suffering from breast cancer. The research team suggests that further studies are required to better understand the best type of physical exertion, as well as the optimal intensity and timing.
